Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria, Thu Sep 7, 2017 1:03PM

Congratulations to the Penleigh & Essendon Grammar (PEGS) Under 15 Soccer team who won the Bill Turner Cup on 6th September 2017.

The Bill Turner Cup is a nationwide competition for Under 15 soccer teams that has been running for almost forty years.  The competition commenced with over 400 schools participating. Coached by Colin Cooper, PEGS won the Victorian division after several tight games against specialist soccer schools from across Melbourne.

The “best of 32”, “best of 16” and “best of 8” games were held in Albury over several weeks.  PEGS won these games easily against schools from Canberra, regional NSW and metropolitan South Sydney.

The semi-finals and grand final were held in Newcastle this week.  PEGS had an easy win (6-0) in the semi-final against a Newcastle school.  The grand final was against a soccer academy from Sydney called Westfields Sports High.  They had won the Bill Turner Cup on eight previous occasions. It was an sensational game.  At the end of normal time, the score was 3-3.  The competition uses the “golden goal” system.  PEGS scored the next goal and claimed the national title.

PEGS captain William Moustis won the competition’s “Spirit of Soccer” award and Zaydan Bello won both the Player of the Series and the Player of the Finals awards.  Zaydan played in the PEGS Firsts this season and has just been selected for the Joeys squad.

Congratulations to all involved.
