During the end of 2007 Ryan was offered a scholarship to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra in 2008. Mary Carroll (Yarra Valley Grammar)
Mary’s background was in netball. An exceptional player, she represented Victoria for twelve consecutive years before going on to become both a Victorian and an Australian selector in that sport.
Employed at Yarra Valley Grammar in Term 2 of 1981 to take charge of Girls’ Sport, Mary immediately breathed life into her field with participation, enthusiasm and results reaching new levels. The netballers were to win several premierships in the Eastern Independent Schools competition under her coaching.
But it was volleyball that was to become her main coaching focus at Yarra Valley Grammar and it soon became, in terms of results, the School’s most successful sport for both girls and boys. Between 1987 and 2000 the girls won ten EIS volleyball premierships. When volleyball gained AGSV premiership status in 1991 Mary decided to take on coaching the boys as well as the girls. Under her coaching the boys then won no fewer than eight of the ten AGSV volleyball premierships decided between 1991 and 2000 and another five between 2001 and 2008. Girls volleyball was granted premiership status in the combined AGSV/APS competition in 2003 and the YVG girls won six of the seven premierships between 2003 and 2009 with first Mary and then Steve Holder as coach.
David Culbert (Yarra Valley Grammar)
Already a veteran of Little Athletics competitions, David entered Grade 6 at Yarra Valley Grammar in the final term of 1978. The timing was right. Led by Olympian Allen Crawley and Commonwealth Games medallist Rob Lethbridge, Yarra Valley Grammar was about to enter into something of a “Golden Age” of athletics. David became perhaps the star performer of that Golden Age. During his six years of participation in AGSV athletics David won fourteen individual events and set four records. These wins included 100 meter and 200 metre dashes, 110 meter hurdles, Long Jumps, High Jumps and Triple Jumps. He was versatile! His winter sport was Hockey, something he also really enjoyed. In his senior years that Hockey team also included another future Olympian, Lachlan Elmer.
David, of course, went on to achieve international recognition. He reached a peak in the early 1990s during which time he won a silver medal at the Auckland Commonwealth Games, was named Australian Athlete of the Year, finished sixth at the World Championships, made an Olympic final and won another silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. After retiring in 1994 David has forged a very successful career in the media and in sports promotion and management.
Sam Harper (Yarra Valley Grammar)
A bright young talent, Sam won Yarra Valley’s batting award in their premiership year of 2010-2011 even though he was only in Year 7 when that cricket season commenced!
Sam captained the Victorian Under 13 team, both the Victorian and Australian Under 15 and Under 17 teams and then was appointed captain of the Australian Under 19 World Cup team. In 2014 Yarra Valley won another cricket premiership, this time under Sam’s captaincy. He also captained the AGSV team. Sam completed his outstanding AGSV career as Yarra Valley’s highest ever First XI run-scorer with a total of 1,123 runs.
At just 18 – while completing his VCE at Yarra Valley Grammar – Sam was rewarded for his hard work with a Victorian Bushrangers rookie contract for 2015-16.
After being upgraded from the Bushrangers rookie list for the 2017-18 cricket season, Sam Harper has become one of the most highly-rated young wicketkeepers in the Australia.
Sam is currently a member of both the Victorian Cricket Team and the Melbourne Renegades Team. He scored his maiden first class century against South Australia earlier this year.
Rob Lethbridge (Camberwell Grammar School / Yarra Valley Grammar)
Rob had been involved in AGSV athletics long before he arrived at Yarra Valley Grammar as a teacher in 1977. As a schoolboy in the Ringwood area he set records in Victorian and All High Schools competitions. Then, representing Camberwell Grammar, he set long jump records in his Under 15, 16 and 17 years. In 1983 that Under 17 record was beaten by one centimetre, and by Yarra Valley’s David Culbert, but the Under 16 record, set in 1968, still stands today – something quite remarkable.
He excelled in other sports also, being a member of Camberwell Grammar’s First XVIII and First XI- memorably taking a hat-trick for the First XI against Mentone Grammar.
At university and afterwards Rob made athletics his chief sport and his highly successful career was highlighted by winning a bronze medal in the decathlon at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.
Rob came to Yarra Valley Grammar in 1977 and remained until 2011, becoming head of the Physical Education Department in 1986 and then taking over as Sportsmaster in 1990 (later called Boys Sport Coordinator) when Allen Crawley became AGSV Secretary. During his time at Yarra Valley Grammar he coached many teams including the First XVIII and the Second XI but surely his chief successes were with the strong athletics teams of the 1980s, teams that won premierships in both 1981 and 1985.
